Mexico Trip Reflections
It’s good to take a moment to pause and truly understand what just happened over the weekend. It went by so fast.
We built a home for a beautiful family — Alfa, Hector, and Luis Morfin. Alfa is a single mother who courageously chose a new path for her family. Despite the challenges, her faith and strength shine through. She welcomed us not as strangers coming to build a house, but as family.
From the start, it felt different. Before we lifted the first hammer or nail, we prayed over the family and over what God would do through this home. It was a powerful, tear-filled moment of worship and gratitude, a reminder that we were building more than walls and a roof; we were building hope.
And then, we got to work, sweating together as one Hillside Church community, laughing, learning, teaching, and seeing God move in every interaction. Young Hector, just 10 years old, asked me my name and remembered it. That simple act reminded me what it means to be seen, to feel human, valued, and loved.
The day flew by as we poured out our energy and our hearts. That night, exhausted but joyful, we fell asleep to the sound of kids laughing and running through the church hostel, celebrating life in its simplest form.
The next day, half our team played with neighborhood kids, spreading joy and laughter. Luis “Turbo” was the clown of the group, and the younger ladies (Emily and Faith) were incredible leaders and role models of kindness. The other half of our group finished the house, boarding drywall, roofing, writing Scripture and encouraging verses on the walls, planting copper nails as symbols of remembrance and prayer.
Something amazing happened, over ten people gave their lives to Christ. In a place marked by material poverty, we witnessed the richness of spiritual abundance. Love became the true currency. Faith the foundation. Hope the future.
We ended the night bonding over tacos, reflecting on the goodness of God and the connections made. I also had the chance to share about redefineD, our medical volunteer nonprofit planting a seed for future partnership to bring hope through healthcare.
As we shared stories that night, I was deeply moved. One kid gave away his shoes. A teen wept as he said goodbye to his new friends. Another child wanted to do more to help. We couldn’t stop talking about the kids and the love they experienced.
This trip was a living picture of what happens when two loving communities come together , serving, worshiping, laughing, crying, and building something eternal.
The kids reflected the hearts of their parents. The parents reflected the heart of God. And we all came home changed. ❤️
